Bowen Establishes ECCC Scholarship

Dr. Frank Bowen (center) of Carthage is shown presenting a check to Dr. Phil A. Sutphin, president of East Central Community College in Decatur, to establish the Dr. Frank and Bobbie McPhail Bowen Scholarship at the College. At left is Dr. Stacey Hollingsworth, ECCC executive director for foundation and alumni relations. Dr. and Mrs. Bowen established the scholarship “because East Central is where we got our start” as a young couple and “we believe a deserving person needs to be provided a good education.” The Bowens met at East Central as freshmen and were members of the Class of 1941. They married in 1943. Dr. Bowen, a Memphis native, was reared in Oktibbeha County near the Winston County line. Mrs. Bowen is a Leake County native. Dr. Bowen, a World War II veteran, also earned B.A. and B.S. degrees from the University of Mississippi, studied at the University Medical Center in Jackson, and later received his M.D. from the University of Tennessee in 1951. Mrs. Bowen attended Mississippi Southern College, now the University of Southern Mississippi, and was a teacher. The Bowens had a son, Frank W. Bowen, Jr. Candidates for the Dr. Frank and Bobbie McPhail Bowen Scholarship  should be a graduate of a high school in Leake County, finish in the top 10 percent of their high school class and enroll as a full-time student at ECCC the fall semester following high school graduation. Selection will be made by the ECCC Scholarship Committee. For more information, contact ECCC Student Services, 601-635-2111, ext. 205.
