Van Chancellor’s long list of coaching honors now includes his recent induction into the Mississippi Community and Junior College Sports Hall of Fame. Chancellor (center), a Louisville native and 1963 graduate of East Central Community College in Decatur, is shown receiving the JUCO award from ECCC President Dr. Phil A. Sutphin. At right is Chancellor’s wife, Betty. Chancellor, a veteran head coach with more than 500 victories, is completing his third year as women’s head basketball at Louisiana State University. He also had successful careers leading the University of Mississippi women’s basketball program, the Houston Comets of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) and as coach of the U. S. National Team in 2002 and 2004. His 2004 team captured an Olympic Gold medal. Chancellor also found success on the high school level, which included guiding Harrison Central High School girls’ basketball teams to consecutive State Class 4-A and State Overall titles. Chancellor, a standout basketball player at Louisville High School and ECCC, joins 14 other representatives of the state’s community and junior colleges who were honored at the fourth annual induction ceremony held at the Jackson Hilton on April 27, 2010.
