East Central Community College football standouts Rod Hawkins (center) of Union and Fred Smith of Decatur (right) signed national letters of intent with Miles College in Birmingham during a ceremony held Jan. 6 on the Decatur campus. At left is Warrior head football coach Brian Anderson. Hawkins, a 5-7, 205-pound running back, was among the state’s top rushers in 2010, with 96 carries for 474 yards and five touchdowns. He averaged 52.7 yards per game and 4.9 yards per carry. He is a product of Union High School. Smith, a 6-1, 285-pound offensive lineman, received MACJC All-Star honors following the 2010 campaign. He attended Newton County High School. Hawkins and Smith are among 12 Warrior players who received scholarships to four-year colleges and universities at mid-year and have transferred to the respective institutions. Miles College is a member of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
