Sophomore hurler Barry Meeks of East Central Community College has been named NJCAA Division II Baseball Player of the Week for May 12, 2010.
Meeks, a right-hander, had a career performance for the Diamond Warriors in their 9-1 victory against Holmes Community College on May 8 in first-round action of the MACJC playoffs. Meeks was on the mound for seven innings, allowing one earned run on five hits. He also fanned 14 batters and walked two.
Meeks is a product of Patrician Academy in Sweetwater, Ala.
East Central won the best of three series against Holmes and is among four squads competing for the MACJC State Baseball Championship scheduled May 13-15 at Smith-Wills Stadium in Jackson.
The Diamond Warriors (36-15) take on tournament host Jones County (38-10) at 6 p.m., and follows the Pearl River (25-25) and Hinds (27-19) matchup at 3 p.m.
Competition in the double-elimination event continues Friday with the championship game set for 1 p.m. Saturday.
East Central’s baseball team is led by head coach Neal Holliman and assistants Michael Avalon and Hunter Vick.
