ECCC Announces Baseball Team Award-Winners

Recipients of various baseball team awards for 2010 were recently announced at East Central Community College in Decatur.

Honorees include pitcher/outfielder Ernie Triplett of Louisville, most valuable player; Allen Johnson of Lena, most valuable pitcher; infielder Andre Yates of Grenada, most valuable defensive player; utility player Charles Hill, most improved player, and first baseman/pitcher Richie Long, most valuable offensive player, both of Carthage.

Triplett, who served as team co-captain, batted .299 with a home run and four doubles. He also collected 24 RBIs. Triplett, a sophomore and product of Louisville High School, plans to continue his baseball career at Delta State University.

Johnson, a sophomore right-hander, posted a 6-4 record and had a 5.10 earned run average. He led in innings pitched (72 1/3) and strikeouts (57). Johnson, a Leake Academy product, will continue his baseball career at Belhaven College.

Yates, who spent most of the season at second base, posted a .941 fielding percentage. The sophomore also batted .339 with three home runs, two triples and 11 doubles, and was credited with 28 RBIs. Yates, a product of Grenada High School, plans to continue his baseball career at the University of North Alabama.

Hill batted .308 and had had five home runs, two triples, 16 doubles and 54 RBIs.     

Long posted a team-best .419 batting average and also led in home runs (14), doubles (17), RBIs (73) and total hits (80). He was also selected All-Region 23 and first team MACJC All-State. 

Hill and Long are both freshmen and products of Carthage High School. 

Awards were presented by head coach Neal Holliman and assistants Michael Avalon and Hunter Vick.

The Diamond Warriors were runners-up in the MACJC State Baseball Tournament and advanced to Region 23 Tournament competition before finishing with a 39-20 record.
