Various honors were presented to football and soccer players and cheerleading squad members at the annual Fall Sports Banquet held Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2010, at East Central Community College in Decatur.
In football, award-winners included linebacker Chris Ficklin, a product of Scott Central High School, All-Region 23, MACJC First Team All-State and Most Outstanding Warrior Skill Player (Defense); wide receiver Radarius Owens of Quitman, MACJC First Team All-State, MACJC All-Star, Team Captain (Offense) and Academic Award; defensive back Gabe Loper of Newton County, MACJC Second Team All-State and Team Captain (Defense); offensive lineman Alaric Keams of Choctaw Central, MACJC Honorable Mention All-State and Team Captain (Offense); defensive lineman Khalid Wilson of OP Walker High School in New Orleans, MACJC Second Team All-State and Team Captain (Defense); quarterback Blake Matherne of Belle Chasse High School in Boothville, La., MACJC Honorable Mention All-State and Most Outstanding Warrior Skill Player (Offense); offensive lineman Lester Jackson of Tuscaloosa (Ala.) Central High School, MACJC All-Star, MACJC Honorable Mention All-State and Most Outstanding Offensive Team Lineman; linebacker Rufus Williams of Astronaut High School in Mims, Fla., MACJC Honorable Mention All-State and Most Outstanding Defensive Team Lineman; wide receiver Fabian Johnson of Coahoma County High School in Clarksdale, MACJC All-Star and MACJC Honorable Mention All-State; offensive lineman Fred Smith of Newton County, MACJC All-Star; and wide receiver/return specialist Reggie Hall of Neville High School in Monroe, La., MACJC Honorable Mention All-State.
ECCC President Dr. Phil A. Sutphin and Warrior head football coach Brian Anderson presented awards.
Awards in women’s soccer were presented to defender Nikki Cumberland of Newton County, MACJC First Team All-State; midfielder Monica Vincent of Newton County, team captain; forward Carrie Rushing of Newton County, Golden Boot; midfielder Laci Hand of Newton County, Hustle Award; midfielder Jessy Harrison of Newton County, Warrior Award; and defender Brooke Boulton of Newton County, Scholar Athlete.
The Lady Soccer Warriors were also recognized as the recipient of the 2010 Tom Shepherd Sportsmanship Award for receiving the fewest number of penalty cards during the season.
In men’s soccer, award-winners were midfielder Aaron Scoggin of Newton County, MACJC First-Team All-State; midfielder Jackson Therrien of Newton County Academy, Team Captain; midfielder Alejandra Chavez of New Albany, Golden Boot; forward Erik Dries of Gulfport, Golden Boot and Hustle Award; keeper Chad Mangum of Oak Hills Academy in West Point, Warrior Award; and defender Joey Walker of Newton County, Scholar Athlete.
Dr. Sutphin and soccer coach Kenneth Thompson presented awards.
Cheerleaders receiving honors include Ashley Amis of Newton County, Captain Award; Will Emmons of Lake, Captain and Warrior awards; Drew Smith of Louisville, Academic Award; Lane Evans of Nanih Waiya, Mascot Award; and Dayton Johnson of Neshoba Central, Coach’s Award.
Dr. Sutphin and cheerleader coach Shelley Thoms presented awards.
