ECCC Hosts Annual District SkillsUSA Competition

Approximately 450 students representing career, technical and technology centers from Laurel to Starkville are scheduled to compete in various leadership and skill events when the annual District III SkillsUSA contest is held Friday, February 5, 2010, at East Central Community College in Decatur.

Wayne Eason, dean of career-technical education at ECCC, said East Central looks forward to hosting the event each year.

“Hosting the District 3 SkillsUSA competition is always a highlight for us. We look forward to having these very talented students on campus and hope that many will continue their career and technical educations with us,” Eason said.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. in the Bradford J. Tucker Applied Technology Center. Competition starts at 10 a.m. in the Tucker building and at various other locations on campus.

Categories include Architectural Drafting, Automotive Service Technology, Cabinetmaking, Carpentry, Chapter Business Procedure, Extemporaneous Speaking, Job Interview, Job Skills Demonstration A, Masonry, Opening and Closing Ceremony, Machining Technology, Prepared Speech, Quiz Bowl, Related Technical Math, Residential Wiring, Sheet Metal, Technical Drafting and Welding.

Winners in each category will be announced at the awards ceremony beginning at 2:30 p.m. in Huff Auditorium. The top three finishers qualify for state competition scheduled in April at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in Perkinston.

District III schools include A. P. Fatheree in Jones County, Choctaw County Career-Technical Center, Forest/Scott County Career-Technology Center, Laurel High School, Leake County Vocational-Technical  Center, McKellar Technology Center, Noxubee County Vocational Center, Philadelphia/Neshoba County Career-Technical Center, Smith County Vocational-Technical Center, Wayne County Vocational-Technical Center, West Point Career and Technical Center, Winston/Louisville Vocational-Technical Center, Clarke County Career and Technical Center, Covington County Vocational and Technical Center, Millsaps Career Center in Starkville, Ross Collins Career and Technical Center in Meridian and West Lowndes High School.
