ECCC Lady Warriors Rally to Beat Coahoma; Warriors Win in Overtime

East Central Community College squads posted non-division wins over Coahoma Community College Monday night in Clarksdale. 

In the women’s contest, freshman guard Demetria Slocum of Starke, Fla., pumped in 25 points as the Lady Warriors overcame a 37-33 halftime deficit to clip the Lady Tigers by a 69-56 margin.

Also scoring for East Central, which improved to 3-1 under fifth-year head coach Bill Smith, were Yolanda Jones of Lake, 10; Danielle Cole of Philadelphia, eight; Shantel Neely of Searcy, Ark., seven; Sharae Pigues of Olive Branch and Sierra Croff of Newton County, four each; Quintinette Odom of Scott Central, three; and Jakiala McWilliams of Neshoba Central, Alise Bryant of Northwest Rankin, Bianca Thomas of Sebastopol and Hannah Lee of Leake Academy, two each. 

Kyla Winford and Corlissa Pope had 11 points each to lead the Lady Tigers.

Kenneth Thomas of Jackson Provine was the top point maker for the Warriors who escaped with a 79-77 overtime win over the host Tigers. The game was tied at 70 at the end of regulation. 

The Warriors, winners of two straight, evened their record at 2-2 under fourth-year head coach Maurice Bowie.

In addition to Thomas, other Warrior scorers were Antonio Grace and Keondre Hodges, both Newton High School products, 13 each; Titus Mims of Alief Hastings High School in Houston, Texas, nine; Aquill Baynard, a product of Elsik High School, also in Houston, Texas, and Joshua Carothers of Columbus, eight each; and Steve Edwards of Newton and Kendall Jackson of Columbus, six each. 

JaMarquis Lewis led Coahoma with 16 points.

EC trailed 37-36 at the break. 

Next up for the Lady Warriors and Warriors are home games with Holmes Community College Thursday, Nov. 12. The women’s matchup begins at 6 p.m. followed by the men’s contest at 8 p.m. in the Brackeen-Wood gym.

EC squads will also be at home Saturday, Nov. 14, when Itawamba Community College teams come to the Decatur campus. Game times are 2 and 4 p.m.
