Mission Statement
The mission of Burton Library is to provide academic resources for all constituents of East Central Community College. The library strives to make resources readily accessible when a wherever they are needed to enhance and promote the total growth and development of the students. The library endeavors to provide students with opportunities to learn how to utilize materials in a variety of formats to access information so that they can continue life long learning. The library staff is committed to providing services and resources to meet the library and learning resource needs of its users and adheres the following guidelines:
- To make adequate library and learning resources and services available to all constituents of the college.
- To acquire quality materials and resources relevant to the curriculum and to meet user needs.
- To ensure that all library materials and resources are accessible, available and adequately delivered to all users.
- To provide an orientation program that offers opportunities for users to learn how to access bibliographic information and other learning resources.
- To catalog and organize the collections in an orderly and accessible arrangement.
- To make readily available modern equipment in good condition as needs arise.
- To provide appropriate reference, interlibrary loan and circulation services in order to meet user needs.
- To involve the teaching faculty, administration, staff and students in the acquisition process for library resources.
- To incorporate technological advances into library / learning resource operations.
- To maintain a facility that is adequate to house, service and make library collections easily available.
- To promote an atmosphere that stimulates the mind and encourages total growth and development of library users.
- To maintain adequate library hours of operation.
- To staff the library with skilled personnel who hold appropriate qualifications in order to promote the library and to support user needs.
Circulation Services
The Circulation Desk is the main service point for patrons to register [fill in user profile form], check out and return materials, request reserve materials, make inquiries and request change for photocopying, request directions, etc. A librarian and trained staff members are on duty to assist patrons.
CHECK OUT PROCEDURES
A valid college identification card or identification through Mississippi Virtual Community College must be presented to borrow materials. Only East Central Community College or Mississippi Virtual Community College students, faculty, staff and administration are eligible to check out materials from Burton Library. Other patrons may use the Library with some restrictions.
LOAN PERIOD
Circulating books are checked out for two weeks, with renewal privileges, providing a "Hold" is not placed on the item(s). Videos are checked out only to faculty. Reference materials, reserve materials and periodicals are for library use only.
LIBRARY FINES
Fines accrue at $.10 per day for overdue books. During the days that the library is closed, no fine is assessed for those days. Students are encourage to check the Student Daily Bulletin, campus bulletin boards, and Library Newsletter to ensure that they are not delinquent with the Library. All patrons are asked to clear with the library before withdrawing from school or before the semester or session ends.
HOLDS
Patrons may place items on hold. Items placed on "hold" will be held for three school days.
RULES OF CONDUCT
Patrons are expected to conduct themselves in a respectful manner by following these guidelines:
l. Remember that each area of the library is designated as a "quiet zone"
2. Do not bring food or beverages into the library
3. Turn cell phones off or on silent
4. If using headphones or headset with any electronic device, do not use at a volume disruptive to other library patrons.
5. Do not misuse library property

Purpose
The purpose of the acquisition policy is to serve as a reference for the library staff to follow when assessing potential acquisitions for the library collections, including print, non-print materials, electronic and other resources. The acquisition policy also includes guidelines for the acceptance and processing of gift resources.

The mission of the acquisition policy is to ensure that the selection of library resources support the educational needs of the students, faculty, administration and staff of the college.
Objectives
The library supports the mission of the College by providing library and learning resources in print, non-print and electronic formats through the following criteria: Curricular (academic, technical, vocational) needs of the students and teaching faculty
1. Development of life skills and life long learning
2. General and cultural needs of students, faculty, administration, staff and the community
3. Acquisition / Selection Responsibility
The primary responsibility for the selection of library resources is with the librarians under the direction of the Head Librarian. The selection / acquisition process is a joint effort among faculty members and the librarians. Faculty, staff, administration and students are encouraged to make recommendations for the collection. The teaching faculty serve as subject specialists for their respective disciplines and are encouraged to assess the adequacy of resources, including participating in the weeding / deselection process of resources.
Selection Guidelines
The library acquires print materials (books, periodicals, pamphlets, maps, etc.), audiovisuals materials (microforms, audiocassettes, videocassettes, DVD, etc.) and electronic resources. The library acknowledges the continuous change and evolving process of information technologies and is open to new formats that support the mission of the library / college.

The library makes every effort to comply with the Copyright laws when acquiring or duplicating resources. A copy of the Copyright Laws is available with this policy, at the Circulation Desk of Burton Library and an abbreviated version via the library web page.
