Three ECCC Diamond Warriors Named To MACJC All-State Squads

Three members of the 2008 East Central Community College baseball team have received MACJC All-State recognition, announced Diamond Warrior head coach Neal Holliman.

Brian Jones of Scottsville, Ky., received first-team honors, and Deon Williams of Northport, Ala., and Steven Barnes of Folson, La., were named to the second team.

Jones, a 6’, 160-pound right-handed pitcher and middle infielder, led the Diamond Warriors in hitting with a .372 average. He belted two home runs, 10 doubles and collected 36 RBIs. He also had success on the mound by posting a 5-1 mark and 2.40 ERA.

He was named ECCC’s most valuable player and most valuable pitcher at the annual Springs Sports Award Program held recently on the Decatur campus.

Jones has signed a national letter of intent to continue his baseball career at the University of Alabama-Huntsville.

He is a former standout at Allen County High School.

Williams, a 5-11, 190-pound infielder/outfielder, batted .342 with three home runs, a triple and 10 doubles. He was credited with 51 RBIs.

A transfer from Valdosta State University, Williams also played football at East Central and was the starting quarterback.

He recently signed a national letter-of-intent to play baseball and football at the University of West Alabama.

Williams is a former standout at Tuscaloosa County High School.

Barnes, a 6-1, 178-pound right-handed pitcher and infielder, is one of the few freshmen to receive post-season recognition.

He posted a 5-1 record on the mound with a 3.92 ERA. He fanned 42 batters.

Barnes is a former standout at Covington (La.) High School.

The Diamond Warriors completed the 2008 season with a 26-24 overall record and were 8-8 in the MACJC Central Division. East Central won the state championship in 2007.
