CAMPUS SAFETY AND SECURITY
The Security Department is responsible for law enforcement, security and emergency response at ECCC.  The Security Office is located next to the Founders' Gymnasium Activities Center Entrance.  To report a crime or emergency, call the Security Department at (601) 635-2111, ext. 268.  If there is no answer, call ext 213 or 204.

For after-hours emergencies, call the Director of Student Life at (601) 635-2119 or the Vice President for Student Services at (601) 635-3900.  The Security Department maintains both telephone and two-way radio contact with the Decatur Police Department and the Newton County Sherriff's Department.

The Security Department provides patrol of the campus 24 hours a day.  In addition, security officers are responsible for a full range of public safety services, including crime reports, investigations, medical emergencies, traffic accidents and enforcement of all regulations of the college.  The College and the Security Department have a close working relationship with local law enforcement agencies.

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITY
The cooperation, involvement, and personal support of students are crucial to the success of the campus safety program.  Students must assume responsibility for their own personal belongings by taking simple, common-sense precautions.  The students' awareness of their environment and their surroundings is the best place to start.

Remember the following:

Cars should be parked in lighted areas and kept locked at all times.  Valuables should be concealed.

Valuables should be engraved for identification purposes.

Suspicious looking individuals should be reported to Residence Hall Directors, the Director of Student Life or the security staff.

Exterior doors to the residence halls should never be propped open.

Room doors should be locked even when the student leaves for a short period of time.

Residents should ask visitors to identify themselves before allowing access to their rooms.

Keys should be carried at all times and never loaned to others.

SECURITY AND ACCESS TO COLLEGE BUILDINGS

The Physical Plant maintains College buildings and grounds with a concern for safety and security.  Security routinely makes reports to the Physical Plant of potential safety hazards noted on our campus.  Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to make such reports as well.

SEVERE WEATHER

The Director of Student Life and the Director of the Physical Plant monitor the National Weather Service radio for severe weather bulletins.  Upon receiving a tornado warning, the campus will be warned by a continuous blast of the tornado siren.

When a warning is received on campus, everyone should go immediately to the lowest level of the building they are in and take shelter in interior rooms or hallways, away from windows and doors.  Those outside a building when a warning is given should go to the nearest occupied building and seek shelter.  Whenever a tornado warning is given on campus, everyone should stay in the shelter area until the warning is lifted.  Warnings are lifted by several short blasts from the siren.

WEAPONS POLICY

East Central Community College prohibits possession or use of firearms, ammunition, knives, instruments of like kind, bows and arrows, and other potentially dangerous weapons, including firecrackers and other explosive devices, in all College buildings, facilities and properties.  ECCC does not store weapons.  An individual living on campus that wishes to have access to a weapon for hunting or other legal purposes must make arrangements to store the weapon off-campus.

ALCOHOL POLICY

It is against school policy to possess any form of alcoholic beverage on College property.  This includes any college-owned building or any vehicle that is on College property.  In addition, all state, county and city laws concerning underage drinking will be enforced and authorities called if necessary.

DRUG POLICY
East Central Community College prohibits the unlawful possession, use, or distribution of illicit drugs on College property or as a part of any College activity.  Any student failing to observe the drug policy will be subject to sanctions by the College in accordance with established disciplinary procedures.  ECCC has an established drug and alcohol prevention program.  Early intervention programs and referral treatment services have been developed to assist students with existing drug and alcohol problems.
ORIENTATION
Students are informed of security procedures and practices during the Student Orientation sessions.  Every student receives a copy of the Student Handbook.  The Handbook contains information on campus traffic regulations, reporting procedures and security procedures.
