There was a lot of free soccer at the East Central Community College soccer pitch Wednesday, Oct. 4, as both the men’s and women’s teams went to overtime in their MACJC North Division matches against Holmes Community College.

The East Central and Holmes women’s teams played 90 minutes of regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods without finding the net in a 0-0 tie.

With the draw, the East Central women are now 3-3-2 on the season and 1-3-1 in league play. Holmes remains undefeated at 9-0-1 overall and 4-0-1 in the league.

In the men’s match, East Central twice lost leads in a 4-3 loss to the Bulldogs in one overtime.

The Warriors held a 2-0 halftime lead thanks to two goals by freshman midfielder Francisco Romero of Ripley. Holmes would tie the match in the second half, before freshman midfielder Randy Argueta from Forest put East Central back on top 3-2.

However, the Bulldogs would add the equalizer with just 13 seconds to play in the match and then get the game-winning goal in the first overtime period.

Sophomore wing Joseph Stewart out of Callaway High School had two assists for East Central, and freshman wing Logan Wilkerson of George County had one.

East Central fell to 6-5-1 on the season and 2-2-1 in the MACJC North Division. Holmes improved to 3-6 overall and 1-3 in the league.

East Central travels to Fulton to play Itawamba, another North Division opponent, on Friday, Oct. 6, at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

The final home matches of the year will be Friday, Oct. 13, against Hinds at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. at the Soccer Complex on the ECCC campus in Decatur.
