The East Central Community College Lady Warriors outscored the home-standing Coahoma Community College Lady Tigers by nine points in the third quarter to overcome a halftime deficit and pull out a 70-67 win Monday, Nov. 13, in Clarksdale.
The rally allowed the Lady Warriors to remain undefeated on the season at 4-0. Coahoma fell to 2-5. East Central also defeated Coahoma on Nov. 2 at home 79-69.
Coahoma jumped out to a 34-28 halftime lead, the first time the Lady Warriors have trailed this season at the intermission. But East Central came out of the locker room and outscored the Lady Tigers 23-14 over the next 10 minutes to gain the lead and the win.
Freshman forward Whitney Waters out of Heidelberg scored 14 of her team-high 16 points in the second half to pace East Central. She also pulled down 15 rebounds, including nine on the offensive end. Freshman guard Tan Lloyd of Newton added 14 points and freshman guard Diamond Wraggs, who prepped at Louisville, had 12 and seven rebounds. Sophomore guard Autumn Taylor from Newton dished out nine assists for East Central.
The East Central men lost for the second time this season to Coahoma, this time 81-71 after losing a five-point halftime lead. Coahoma beat the Warriors on Nov. 2 in Decatur 81-75.
The Warriors controlled the boards in the first half and led by as many as 11 before taking a 40-35 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, the Coahoma Tigers only turned the ball over twice and hit eight shots from beyond the three-point arc to outscore the Warriors by 15 in the final 20 minutes.
Sophomore guard Jaquan Dotson, who prepped at Neshoba Central, again led East Central, just missing out on his third straight double-double. Dotson had 22 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore forward Cameron Diggs (Mobile, Ala., Blount) had 17 points and five rebounds, and Sophomore forward Antonio Clark out of Leake Central added 10 points and seven rebounds. Freshman guard Tre Pinkston from Forest had a game-high six assists.
With the loss, East Central dropped to 1-3 on the season. Coahoma improved to 2-5. It was the second straight loss for East Central after leading at the half.
The East Central men will face Coastal Alabama-South in Bay Minette at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 16.
The next home action is Nov. 20-21 for the EC Classic in Brackeen-Wood Gym. The Lady Warriors will host Lawson State Community College (Birmingham, Ala.) on Nov. 20 and Southern University-Shreveport on Nov. 21, both games at 5 p.m. The Warriors will play Faith Prep Academy (West Memphis, Ark.) on Nov. 20 and Mississippi Delta Community College on Nov. 21, both at 7 p.m.
