The East Central Community College Lady Warriors overcame a fast start by the Mississippi Gulf Coast Lady Bulldogs Thursday night, Feb. 8, to earn a 75-64 MACJC South Division win in Perkinston. It was quite the opposite in the men’s action as the Gulf Coast Bulldogs rolled out to a big lead early and never looked back in defeating the Warriors 86-61.

The games were played in the Weathers/Wentzell Center on the Gulf Coast campus.

The East Central women fell behind early, thanks to a 12-0 first quarter run by the Lady Bulldogs. Gulf Coast led by as much as 32-18 before the Lady Warriors closed the gap to three points, 41-38, at the half. A 15-4 run in the third quarter helped ECCC gain control of the game and the win.

Freshman guard Tamirra Haskin of Laurel led the way for the Lady Warriors with 23 points. Freshman forward Sharan Turner (Gonzales, La., East Ascension) added 18 and Breanna Riley out of Biloxi High School had 14.

The East Central Lady Warriors improved to 11-7 overall and 4-6 in the MACJC South Division. The Gulf Coast Lady Bulldogs fell 6-13 overall and 0-10 in the league.

In the men’s game, Gulf Coast ran out to a 17-2 lead early and at one point stretched the lead to 24 points at 32-8. East Central could not recover from the fast Bulldog start. The Warriors did close the gap to 40-27 at the half with a late run.

Sophomore guard Jaquan Dotson of Neshoba Central led the Warriors with 15 points, while sophomore forward Cameron Diggs (Mobile, Ala., Blount) tossed in 12 and freshman guard Roti Ware of Morton had 11.

The Warriors fell to 9-10 overall and 3-7 in MACJC South Division play. Gulf Coast improved to 13-6 and 6-4 in the league.

The ECCC Warriors and Lady Warriors return home on Monday, Feb. 12, to host Copiah-Lincoln Community College at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. in Brackeen-Wood Gym in Decatur.

The East Central teams are on the road Thursday, Feb. 15, when they travel to Poplarville to face Pearl River Community College at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m.
