The East Central Community College women’s tennis team improved its spring record to 2-1 Friday, Feb. 23, with a 9-0 win at Itawamba Community College in Fulton.

The ECCC men lost a tough 6-3 match to the ICC Indians to fall to 0-3 on the season.

Matches scheduled later that afternoon in New Albany against Blue Mountain College were canceled due to weather.

“The women put together a great match,” said ECCC head coach Jay Pacelli. “They came out determined after a tough loss last week to Co-Lin. It was a terrific bounce-back victory.”

In the women’s doubles matches at ICC, EC’s Gabriela Gomez (Bogota, Colombia) and Tatiana Quinonez (Bogota, Colombia) defeated Lizbeth Jiminez/Bailey Gillentine, 8-1; EC’s Alexis Tindall of Newton County Academy and Caylee Grace Yarborough of Loyd Star beat Madison Mayhall/Caroline Ferguson, 8-6; and EC’s Julia Johnston of Florence and Sara Mazzella of Newton County Academy defeated Georgia Claire Campbell/Claire Ferguson, 8-3.

In the women’s singles, EC’s Gomez defeated Kaitlyn Meadows, 6-1, 6-2; EC’s Quinonez beat Gillentine, 6-1, 6-0; EC’s Tindall defeated Mayhall, 6-4, 2-6, 12-10;EC’s Yarborough beat Caroline Ferguson, 6-3, 6-1; EC’s Bethany Wellerman out of Newton County Academy beat Claire Ferguson, 6-1, 6-0; and EC’s Johnston defeated Campbell, 6-0, 6-4.

In the men’s doubles action, EC’s Tom Langelaar (Veldhoven, Netherlands) and Joseph Jabour of Warren Central beat David Garcia-Perez/Edson Marchant, 9-7; EC’s Willie Wooten of Warren Central and Landon Gibson of Clarkdale lost to Ezra Blissard/Michael Crotts, 8-2; and EC’s Emontie Lewis of Terry and Jake Wofford of East Webster lost to Blake Gregory/Roberto Valadez, 8-4.

In the men’s singles, EC’s Langelaar lost to Garcia-Perez, 6-2, 6-0; EC’s Wooten lost to Blissard, 6-3, 3-6, 10-8; EC’s Jabour lost to Valadez, 6-4, 6-4; EC’s Lewis beat Marchant, 3-6, 5-3 (retired); EC’s Gibson beat Crotts, 5-7, 6-3, 10-8; and EC’s Isaac Keen of Winston Academy lost to Gregory, 6-4, 3-6, 10-6.

Both the ECCC Lady Warriors and Warriors are back in action Wednesday, Feb. 28, when they host Hinds Community College at 2 p.m. at the Tennis Complex in Decatur. After traveling to Goodman to face Holmes Community College at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 1, the ECCC teams will return home to host Jones County Junior College at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 3.
