ECCC Men’s Tennis Tops No. 18 Marion Military

After a week of competition against nationally ranked opponents, the No. 17 East Central Community College men’s tennis team picked up a win over visiting No. 18 Marion Military Institute Saturday, April 8, at the Tennis Complex on the Decatur campus.

After losses to No. 19 Co-Lin and No. 18 Mississippi Gulf Coast earlier in the week, the Warriors knocked off Marion 6-3.

The East Central women fell to No. 14 Marion Military women 9-0.

A day earlier, both East Central teams suffered defeats to nationally ranked Gulf Coast teams. The men lost a 6-3 match, while the women fell 9-0 to the No. 21 Gulf Coast women.

On the season, the East Central men are now 11-6 and the women are 7-10.

Men’s Action:

In the men’s doubles against Marion, Marion’s Isaiah Polk/Barry Booth beat EC’s Tom Langelaar from Veldhoven, Netherlands, and Joseph Jabour of Warren Central High School, 8-2; EC’s John Jimenez of Oruro, Bolivia, and Will Stewart of Newton County High School won by forfeit; and EC’s Brandon Rogers of Winston Academy and Willie Wooten out of Warren Central High School defeated Andrew Carey/Geoffrey Winston, 8-2.

In singles play against Marion, Polk defeated EC’s Langelaar, 6-4, 1-0 (forfeit); EC’s Jimenez beat Booth, 7-5, 6-0; Carey beat EC’s Jabour, 6-3, 6-2; EC’s Stewart won by forfeit; EC’s Rogers won by forfeit; and EC’s Graham Murphree from Newton County High School beat Winston, 6-0, 6-0.

In men’s doubles play against Gulf Coast, the Gulf Coast team of Travis Bell/John Murphy defeated EC’s Langelaar/Jabour, 9-7; EC’s Jimenez/Stewart beat Noah Tippen/Noah Rowell, 8-6; and Brett Bowen/Reid Cudd beat EC’s Rogers/Wooten, 8-2.

In the singles against Gulf Coast, Bell defeated EC’s Langelaar, 6-3, 6-2; EC’s Jimenez beat Murphy, 6-3, 6-1; Tippen beat EC’s Jabour, 6-4, 7-6; Rowell beat EC’s Stewart, 6-2, 6-1; Cudd beat EC’s Rogers, 6-2, 6-3; and Murphree beat Bowen, 6-7, 6-4 (10-4).

Women’s Action:

In the women’s doubles matches against Marion, Marion’s Paola Bou/Morgan Ingram beat EC’s Tatiana Quinonez of Bogota, Columbia, and Julia Johnston of Florence High School, 8-0; Bridget Mayfield/Alana Larcombe beat EC’s Chaney Mills of Newton County High School and Andi McCrimon of Winston Academy, 8-2; and Makenzie Ralston/Rebecca Lin beat EC’s Samantha McCrimon of Winston Academy and Hannah Payne from Union High School, 8-0.

In singles play, Bou beat EC’s Quinonez, 6-0, 6-0; Larcombe beat EC’s Mills, 6-2, 6-1; Ingram beat EC’s Samantha McCrimon, 6-0, 6-0; Mayfield beat EC’s Andi McCrimon, 6-1, 6-1; Ralston beat EC’s An Duong from Richland High School, 6-0, 6-0; and Lin beat EC’s Emily Dykeman of Forest High School, 6-1, 6-0.

In doubles action against Gulf Coast, Gulf Coast’s Paulina Estrada/Bianca Buie beat EC’s Quinonez/Johnston, 8-0; Katie Burrall/Jenna Lyons beat EC’s Mills/Andi McCrimon, 8-4; and Sarah McMillan/Jasmine Sartin beat EC’s Samantha McCrimon/Payne, 8-1.

In singles play, Estrada beat EC’s Quinonez, 6-0, 6-0; Buie beat EC’s Mills, 6-1, 6-3; Burrall beat EC’s Johnston, 6-4, 6-0; Sartin beat EC’s Andi McCrimon, 6-1, 6-4; Lyons beat EC’s Duong, 1-6, 6-2 (10-6); and Jill Craft beat EC’s Dykeman, 6-1, 6-4.

The East Central men’s and women’s teams will close out the regular season at home next week hosting Northeast Mississippi Community College on Monday, April 10, at 2 p.m. and Jones County Junior College on Wednesday, April 12, at 3 p.m. on Sophomore Day.
