The East Central Community College Lady Warrior softball team scored twice in the top of the eighth inning to grab a 5-4 second game win over Marion Military Institute Monday, Feb. 12, and salvage a doubleheader split with the Lady Tigers.

Marion Military won the opener 9-1 in the doubleheader played in Marion, Ala.

East Central, ranked No. 10 in the NJCAA Division II Softball Poll, is now 3-1 overall on the season. Division I Marion Military is 6-4.

In the opener it was all Marion Military, as the Lady Tigers scored in four of the five innings of the 9-1 run-rule win. The big blow came in the bottom of the fifth inning when Marion put four runs on the scoreboard, including three on a bases clearing error.

East Central’s lone run came on an RBI single from sophomore Katherine Shell of Brookhaven in the top of the fourth inning.

Five of Marion Military’s nine hits in game one were doubles. East Central produced seven hits.

In the second game, East Central got on the scoreboard first in the top of the second with a two-out, two-run single from sophomore Madalyn McMahon of Neshoba Central. The Lady Tigers tied the game 2-2 in the bottom half of the third inning and took a 3-2 lead with a single run in the bottom of the fourth.

The Lady Warriors tied the game again at 3-3 in the top of the fifth when sophomore Mackenzie Johnson of Nanih Waiya scored on a passed ball.

The game went to extra innings tied 3-3 when East Central got a pair of two-out doubles in the top of the eighth from sophomore Alyssa Pendergrass of Columbia followed by Tagen Remmel of Clinton to go up 4-3. Freshman Macy Brabham of Brookhaven then gave the Lady Warriors a 5-3 lead when she singled home what would be the game-winner in the 5-4 victory.

Brabham had three hits in her first action of the season.

Sophomore Mackenzie Rousseau (Vanderbilt Catholic, Houma, La.) got the win in the circle to move to 2-0 on the season.

East Central will travel to Brewton, Ala., Thursday, Feb. 15, to face another Division I opponent in Coastal Alabama-East.

ECCC will host the EC Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 17. The Lady Diamond Warriors will face East Mississippi Community College at 11 a.m. and Hinds Community College a 3 p.m. Hinds and East Mississippi will play at 1 p.m.
