East Central Community College (ECCC) now has a Mississippi Army National Guard recruiter housed on campus to serve as a resource and point of contact for students interested in exploring military opportunities.
SSG Davonte Shaw, a 2016 graduate of Scott Central High School and a 2018 ECCC graduate, will serve in this role while continuing his recruitment efforts across his entire district.
Shaw said his goal is to help students better understand the role of the Mississippi Army National Guard and how it can benefit their educational and career paths.
“I’m hoping our students gain knowledge of the Mississippi Army National Guard and know what we do and how we can help them,” Shaw said. “If students are interested in the Mississippi Army National Guard, my office is open to them, and I am excited to talk with them.”
Reflecting on his own journey, Shaw recalled how a single conversation at ECCC changed the course of his life.
“I did not have a recruiter in high school, but I did have a recruiter talk to me in my music appreciation class at ECCC, and it changed my life,” he said. “Hopefully, I can provide that same type of change for the next generation.”
By being housed on campus, Shaw will provide current students with direct access to information, guidance, and opportunities related to the Mississippi Army National Guard while continuing his broader recruiting responsibilities.
“We are proud to welcome one of our own alumni back to campus in this important role,” said ECCC President Dr. Brent Gregory. “This partnership gives our students another pathway to explore their futures, and SSG Shaw’s story is a testament to how life-changing those opportunities can be.”
