The East Central Community College women’s basketball team defeated the Pearl River Community College Lady Wildcats 78-69 Thursday, Feb. 16, in Brackeen-Wood Gymnasium on the Decatur campus.

Sophomore point guard Shantavis Hughes of Hattiesburg High School posted a career-high 18 points to help the Lady Warriors pick up the win.

After falling behind by as many as 10 points in the first quarter, ECCC was able to rally back to take a one-point lead after one quarter of play. The Lady Warriors then extended their lead 38-27 at the half.

The Lady Wildcats tried to close the deficit in the second half, but could not overcome the damage done in the first half.

Four other Lady Warriors also had double-digit scoring in the victory including Autumn Taylor of Newton High School with 15 points, six assists and five steals; Aniyah Marshall of Itawamba Agricultural High School had 14 points; Curtisha Coleman of Wayne County High School with 13 points; and Laneisha Jeans of Pine Forest (Fla.) High School with 12.

The East Central women travel to nationally ranked No. 16 Jones County Junior College in Ellisville on Monday, Feb. 20. The game begins at 5:30 p.m. The Lady Warriors will return home Thursday, Feb. 23, to host Hinds Community College for the final game of the regular season and “Sophomore Night” in Brackeen-Wood Gym. Tipoff is set to begin at 5:30 p.m.
