The East Central Community College women’s basketball team fought off a Meridian Community College second half surge to beat MCC 78-74 Monday, Feb. 6, in Meridian.

The Lady Warriors led by double-digits most of the contest, and by as many as 16 in the first half, but the Lady Eagles battled back to trail by just one with 55 seconds left in the game.

Sophomore Laneisha Jeans of Pine Forest (Fla.) High School led all scorers with 20 points. Also, in double-digit scoring were Curtisha Coleman of Wayne County High School with 19 points and eight rebounds, Bryona Stewart of Itawamba Agricultural High School with 14 points, Shantavis Hughes of Hattiesburg High School with 13 points, and Autumn Taylor of Newton High School adding 11 points.

The Lady Warriors moved to 10-8 on the season and 4-5 in MACJC South Division play. MCC fell to 2-8 in the division and 8-11 overall.

East Central will host Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in South Division action in Brackeen-Wood Gymnasium in Decatur Thursday, Feb. 9, at 5:30 p.m.
