The Early Childhood Academy at East Central Community College is celebrating “The Week of the Child” April 16-20 with a series of activities and events on the campus in Decatur.

The Week of the Child is an annual celebration hosted by the National Association for the Education of Young Children to celebrate early learning, young children, their teachers and caregivers, and families.

All events are open to the public.

Among the activities scheduled at ECCC’s Early Childhood Academy located in the Career and Technical Annex on 10th Street on the campus in Decatur are:

  • Make a Book/Take a Book, 1-4 p.m., Monday, April 16—The parents and children will be given materials to make a book together.
  • Tasty Tuesday Recipe, 1-4 p.m., Tuesday, April 17—The parents and children will make healthy snacks together. Tonya Milsap with the college’s Childcare Center will prepare and serve healthy snacks from the children’s book “Lana’s Favorite Recipes.”
  • Wear Blue Wednesday, 8 a.m. to Noon, Wednesday, April 18—The parents and children will plant a flower in a pot to support child abuse awareness. Students, parents, and children are encouraged to wear blue for child abuse awareness.
  • Trike-a-Thon Thursday, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., Thursday, April 19—Parents will be invited to come out with their children to ride their tricycle or to walk around the mall area of the campus to support St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Gross motor activities will be available for the children.
  • Fantastic Friday Frame Making, 1 to 4 p.m., Friday, April 20—Parents and children will make picture frames together, and staff will take photos of them to put in the frames.

“We are excited about our weeklong celebration centered on the growth and development of our young children,” said Kenyotia Moncrief, resource and referral associate with the Early Childhood Academy. “We hope to see families and childcare providers in the community at the various events as we aim to lift up and support our parents, teachers, and community who support our young children.”

The Early Childhood Academy offers professional development, technical assistance, referrals, resources, and support for childcare providers and families.
