The No. 20 ranked East Central Community College Warriors grabbed a 12-2 run-rule win in game one, but fell short in the quest for the sweep in game two of a doubleheader against the Northeast Mississippi Community College Tigers Friday, April 13.
After the big game one win, the Warriors tied game two 5-5 in the top of the seventh with an RBI single off the bat of freshman Ken Scott of Clarkdale, only to see the Tigers get a walk-off, three-run homer in the bottom of the inning for the 8-5 win.
The MACJC league games were played at Corinth High School in Corinth.
With the split, East Central is 23-11 overall on the season and 12-6 in the league. The Warriors are in a three-way tie for third place in MACJC play with five league doubleheaders to play. The Northeast Tigers are 18-15 overall and 9-9 in the league.
The Warriors got a solid pitching performance in game one from sophomore right-hander Kolby Crowley of East Webster. The University of North Alabama signee threw all five innings, giving up just two runs on five hits.
Offensively, East Central was led by Scott, who hit a three-run homer in the top of the first inning. It was his fourth of the season. The Warriors added nine runs in the top of the third, thanks in part to an RBI double from Wyatt Ball of Nanih Waiya, and three straight RBI singles from Alex Hay of Lewisburg, Deon Leflore of Leake Central, and Jacob Edwards of Newton County.
East Central took an early 4-0 lead after two innings in the nightcap. A single from Edwards brought in two of the runs. Northeast got to within 4-3 after three, and then tied it with a solo home run in the fifth.
Trailing 5-4 going to the top of the seventh, Ball singled and was sacrificed to second. Scott came on to pinch hit and singled to centerfield to tie the score 5-5. With two on and one out in the bottom of the frame, Northeast would get the 8-5 win on a three-run home run from Tyler Samaniego.
Sophomore right-hander Dylan Marsh of Lake Cormorant took the loss in relief.
East Central returns home after three straight road series to host Copiah-Lincoln Community College on Wednesday, April 18, at Clark-Gay Baseball Complex in Decatur. Doubleheader action begins at 3 p.m. The Warriors will travel to Fulton on Saturday, April 21, to face Itawamba at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.
