More than 550 graduates were awarded degrees and/or certificates during East Central Community College’s 92nd Commencement Ceremonies held Friday, May 7, 2021, in Huff Auditorium on the Decatur campus.
Dr. Teresa Mackey, vice president for instruction, presented the candidates for graduation, and ECCC President Dr. Brent Gregory awarded degrees and certificates during the ceremony.
This year’s graduates included those who completed degree requirements following the spring 2021 and fall and summer 2020 terms.
Graduating sophomores who participated in the 10 a.m. ceremony which included Career & Technical Education and Healthcare Education students were Quinton Billie of Philadelphia who gave the commencement address; Lynn Wyatt of Conehatta, who gave the invocation; and Rashunda Williams of Newton, who gave the benediction. Presenting the musical selection “Homeward Bound” during the morning ceremony were graduating sophomores Abigail Clarke, Kirsten Loper, and Madyson Warren, all of Decatur; Garrett Nelson of Little Rock; and Mallory Liles of Conehatta.
During his address, Billie, who is a graduate of the Automotive Technology Program and received the Associate of Applied Science degree, said, “As we prepare to close this chapter of our lives and start preparing for new opportunities, I want you all to remember how much we’ve learned during this last year to adjust to obstacles thrown our way and have successfully overcome them. There is so much we have to be proud of because we made it through school in the middle of a pandemic. Who else can say that? We learned to adjust to our surroundings and attain new skills that will one day make this world a better place.”
Graduating sophomores who participated in the 2 p.m. Associate of Arts and Associate of Science ceremony were Brian Pace of Collinsville, commencement address; Connor Boggan of Hickory, invocation; and Jasmin Brooks of Collinsville, benediction. Presenting the musical selection “Homeward Bound” during the afternoon ceremony were graduating sophomores Garrett Nelson of Little Rock, Jordan Wall of Newton, Madyson Warren of Decatur, Alison Watson of Collinsville, and Cambre Willis of Philadelphia.
Pace, who received the Associate of Arts degree in the University Transfer Program, said during his address, “Just as no one saw Covid-19 coming, I am reasonably sure that life will hold more challenges to come. Inspirational speaker Roger Crawford said, ‘Being challenged is inevitable, being defeated is optional.’ The time to respond to those future challenges is now, not when we are hit head on with one. We can resolve to respond with integrity, to surround ourselves with virtuous people as our support team and to give God first place in our lives. Students, as we go, let us hold fondly these memories for they help mold the persons we will become.”
