Beginning in Fall 2023, East Central Community College is expanding its agricultural and related science education to meet the growing demand. According to estimates from the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center, enrollment in ag and related science majors at two-year institutions across the nation increased by 41% in Fall 2021.

ECCC recognizes the local interest in ag and related science majors, as evidenced by the outstanding involvement of K-12 schools in the area. These schools actively participate in various ag organizations, activities, and competitions within ECCC's five-county district, including 4-H, SkillsUSA, and FFA.

To cater to this demand, East Central will introduce a new class called AGR 1112 Survey of Agriculture in August. This introductory course will provide an overview of the agricultural industry's general functions, organization, and operation at both national and international levels. In addition to classroom instruction, students will have the opportunity to interact with professionals working in agriculture-related fields through guest speakers, career exploration, and networking.

"We are excited to respond to the local interest in our community, as well as the national trends that support agriculture as a growing field," says ECCC President, Dr. Brent Gregory. "The strong interest and enrollment we have already seen for this course are a testament to the enthusiasm and potential in this area moving forward."

The class will be under the instruction of Jill Wagner who also serves as the State Relations Specialist for the Southern Region of the National FFA Organization.

In addition to the new course, ECCC offers other opportunities closely related to agriculture, such as Dendrology, Zoology, Nutrition, and Business. Looking ahead, with ongoing support and student interest, ECCC plans to expand its offerings to include Animal Science, Poultry, Agricultural Economics, and Soils.

Enrollment for the upcoming fall semester is currently open. Interested students can submit their free application for admission, official transcripts, and placement test scores to register.
