Behind two goals from freshman defender Mary Grace Winston, the East Central Community College Lady Warrior soccer team picked up a 4-2 win over the Southwest Tennessee Community College Saluqis in an exhibition match Saturday, Aug. 11, at the soccer field in Decatur.

In addition to the goals by Winston, who prepped at Madison Central, the Lady Warriors also got goals from Macayla Johnson, a freshman defender from West Jones in Laurel, and from sophomore midfielder Carrington Payne of Richland.

“I’m happy with the result, but more encouraged that the girls have taken training and brought our system of play to the pitch today in tough heat and conditions,” said Ryan Joiner, who coached his first game as ECCC’s head women’s soccer coach. “Physically, the girls are spent and will have the next two days off to recover before beginning week two of the preseason. They will continue to have to learn the philosophy we’ve implemented and connect with one another to develop that style of play.”

After another exhibition match at Meridian Community College at 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 17, East Central will travel to Memphis, Tenn., to face Southwest Tennessee again on Wednesday, Aug. 22, and 2 p.m.
