The East Central Community College men’s soccer team beat Northwest Mississippi Community College 3-1 Friday, Oct. 7, for its fifth straight win.

Sophomore midfielder Fredy Gutierrez of Pontotoc High School scored off an assist by John Jimenez of Oruo, Bolivia, to begin the scoring for the Warriors in the first half.

In the second half, defender Gage Leifried of Southeast Lauderdale High School scored his first goal of the season off an assist by Gutierrez. Then Gutierrez drove in a penalty kick to give East Central a 3-0 lead.

Northwest was able to score with three minute left in the match to pull the final margin to 3-1.

The win over the Rangers improved the Warriors’ record to 8-6 on the season and 4-2 in the North Division.

Sophomores Gutierrez, forward Blake Bonds of Germantown High School and goalie Zack Vickers of Northwest Rankin High School were selected to participate in the MACJC All-Star game to be held at Freedom Ridge Park in Ridgeland Saturday, Nov. 12.

The East Central men’s soccer team will travel to Holmes Community College to face the Bulldogs Friday, Oct. 14, at 3 p.m.
