The East Central Community College men’s tennis team opened its 2017 season with a convincing 6-3 upset over No. 15 nationally ranked Marion Military Institute in a match played Friday, Feb. 3, in Marion, Ala.

“This was a great effort, particularly in the doubles matches,” said second-year ECCC Head Tennis Coach Jay Pacelli. “The match was won by sweeping the doubles. It’s a terrific start to our season.”

The East Central men, ranked No. 22 nationally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, opened with three wins in the doubles competition. The team of Tom Langelaar from Veldhoven, Netherlands, and Joseph Jabour of Warren Central High School defeated Marion’s Isaiah Polk and Barry Booth 8-6; John Jimenez of Oruro, Bolivia, and Will Stewart of Newton County High School defeated Marion’s Andrew Carey and Harrison Foster 9-8 (7-4); and Graham Murphree of Newton County High School and Brandon Rogers of Winston Academy beat Marion’s Dakota Christofer and Geoffrey Winslow 8-2.

In singles play, Polk defeated EC’s Langelaar 6-2, 6-4; EC’s Jimenez beat Booth 6-3, 7-6 (7-4); Carey beat EC’s Jabour 6-2, 6-1; Foster beat EC’s Stewart 6-4, 6-3; EC’s Rogers beat Christofer 6-0, 6-1; and EC’s Willie Wooten out of Warren Central High School beat Winslow 6-0, 6-0.

In the women’s action at Marion, the Lady Warriors fell to the No. 13 ranked Marion Military Institute women 9-0.

In the doubles matches, EC’s Tatiana Quinonez of Bogota, Columbia, and Julia Johnston of Florence High School fell to Paola Bou and Morgan Ingram 8-0; EC’s Chaney Mills of Newton County High School and Andi McCrimon of Winston Academy fell to Bridget Mayfield and Makenzie Ralston 8-2; and EC’s Samantha McCrimon of Winston Academy and An Duong from Richland High School fell to Rebecca Lin and Jordan Berrios 8-1.

In singles play, EC’s Quinonez fell to Bou 6-0, 6-1; EC’s Mills fell to Ingram 6-1, 6-0; EC’s Johnston fell to Mayfield 6-0, 6-0; EC’s McCrimon fell to Ralston 6-2, 6-2; EC’s Duong fell to Lin 6-0, 6-0; and EC’s Dykeman fell to Berrios 6-2, 6-1.

The East Central men’s and women’s teams travel to Meridian Community College Monday, Feb. 6, for matches at 2 p.m., before traveling to Raymond Thursday, Feb. 9, to face Hinds Community College at 2 p.m.
