East Central Community College is currently seeking students interested in a free course in Manufacturing Skills Basic. The course can be made available throughout the college district, which includes Leake, Neshoba, Newton, Scott and Winston counties, and multiple courses will be offered if enough interest is shown during the registration period, which is currently open. Dates, times and locations for the 10-week course will depend on interest from the public.

The 96-hour course covers five major areas of knowledge with the intent of training the student to be a “shop floor” employee. Topics covered will include Basic Computer Literacy, Safety and CPR, Blueprint Reading, Precision Measurement, and an introduction to manufacturing improvement methods that include lean manufacturing, quick changeover, 5S, teamwork and problem solving.

Students must complete the WorkKeys assessment at a minimum of Silver Level to participate in this course.
