The East Central Community College men’s and women’s soccer teams opened 2017 Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges North Division play Friday, Sept. 1, but with mixed results.

The ECCC women opened with a 2-0 loss to the unbeaten Lady Bulldogs.

The match was scoreless until the 47th minute when Kendal Walsh got Holmes on the scoreboard. Sarah Donahoo added another Lady Bulldog goal eight minutes later.

East Central is now 1-1 on the young season and 0-1 in MACJC North Division play. Holmes is 3-0 and 1-0.

In the men’s action that followed, East Central shutout the Bulldogs 3-0 thanks in part to a pair of goals from sophomore wing Joseph Stewart. The Callaway High School product scored at the 21st and 62nd minutes. Sophomore midfielder Henry Artica of Oxford added a goal at the 39th minute.

Sophomore midfielder Jacob Thomas and sophomore forward Tanner Lindsey, both of Northwest Rankin, assisted on goals.

Freshman Dylan Shoemaker of Forest got the win in goal.

The Warriors improved to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in North Division play. Holmes fell to 0-2 and 0-1.

The matches were played at Ridgeland High School.

Both East Central teams are back in action Wednesday, Sept. 6, hosting North Division foe Itawamba Community College at the Soccer Complex in Decatur. The women will play at 2 p.m. and the men to follow at 4 p.m.
