East Central Community College sophomores Katie McCool of Louisville and Amanda Creekmore of Newton were named to the 2017 Phi Theta Kappa Community and Junior Colleges All-Mississippi Academic Team.

The All-Mississippi Community College Academic Team recognizes scholarly achievements and leadership accomplishments of students enrolled in the state’s two-year colleges.

McCool, a chemistry major, was one of 15 students named to the First Team. She received a $1,000 scholarship.

Her honors include selection as HEADWAE Student of the Year and Who’s Who Among Students in American Community/Junior Colleges.

She serves as president of Phi Theta Kappa honor society, president of the President’s Council and sophomore class treasurer. She is a member of the Baptist Student Union Council, Warrior Corps, Environment Club and Concert Choir.

McCool is a graduate of Winston Academy and is the daughter of Robert and Pam McCool of Louisville.

Creekmore, a business administration major, was one of 48 students named to the Second Team.

She is a President’s List scholar and was named to Who’s Who Among Students in American Community/Junior Colleges.

She serves as vice president of service for Phi Theta Kappa honor society, and received numerous scholarships including the Kinoth and Ella Mae Thornton/Emerson Electric Scholarship and the Thomas W. Thrash Memorial Scholarship.

Creekmore is a graduate of Newton County Academy and is the daughter of Jeff and Donna Creekmore of Newton.

They were honored along with other outstanding community and junior college students from across the state during an event in Jackson.

Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant, State Sen. Terry Burton, vice chairman of the universities and colleges committee; Dr. Andrea Mayfield, executive director of the Mississippi Community College Board, and Dr. Lynn Tincher-Ladner, Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society executive director served as distinguished speakers at the recognition luncheon.

Both honorees received medallions, certificates, and printed resolutions from the Mississippi Senate and House of Representatives. 

The All-Mississippi Academic Team program is coordinated by Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges and the Mississippi Community College Board.
