The East Central Community College women’s tennis team defeated No. 24 ranked Hinds Community College 5-4, while the No. 22 Hinds Eagles defeated the East Central men 7-2 in matches played Tuesday, March 5, at the ECCC Tennis Complex on the campus in Decatur.
The ECCC women improved to 6-3, while the men fell to 5-4.
“It was a terrific victory by our women against a good Hinds team,” said ECCC head tennis coach Jay Pacelli. “We got contributions from everyone. Alexis Tindall and Bethany Wellerman came back with impressive singles wins after a tough doubles loss, and Ali Grace Walker played her best tennis of the season.”
Pacelli said it was a tough loss for the men against a quality team from Hinds, but that there were some great individual performances, especially by Chris Lawrance and Isaac Keen in singles.
Men’s Doubles Results:
Hinds’ Mateo Garcia and Carlos Trujillo defeated EC’s Chris Lawrance (York, Western Australia) and Isaac Santitto (Innisfail, Queensland, Australia), 9-8; Hinds’ Chris Adams and Bryce Livingston defeated EC’s Dylan Barnett (Newton County) and Peyton Chaney (Newton County), 8-4; and Hinds’ Eric Holmes and Drew Rexrode defeated EC’s Isaac Keen (Winston Academy) and Will Ladner (Stone County), 8-2.
Men’s Singles Results:
EC’s Lawrance defeated Trujillo, 6-4, 6-4; Garcia defeated EC’s Santitto, 7-5, 6-2; Holmes defeated EC’s Barnett, 6-0, 6-3; EC’s Keen defeated Livingston, 6-7, 6-4 (11-9); Adams defeated EC’s Ladner, 6-0, 6-1; and Rexrode defeated EC’s Chaney, 6-2, 6-2.
Women’s Doubles Results:
EC’s Josie Hurst (Newton County) and Ali Grace Walker (Newton County) defeated Hinds’ Paula Gutierrez and Ayrelle Grace Waters, 8-3; EC’s Gabriela Gomez (Bogota, Colombia) and Kayla Baucum (Newton County) defeated Anna Hayden Taylor and Olivia White, 9-8 (7-1); and Hinds’ Courtney Buffington and Madison Curtis defeated EC’s Alexis Tindall (Newton County Academy) and Bethany Wellerman (Newton County Academy), 9-8 (7-3).
Women’s Singles Results:
Gutierrez defeated EC’s Gomez, 6-2, 6-3; EC’s Walker defeated Hinds’ Danna Gonzalez, 6-3, 6-1; Curtis defeated EC’s Hurst, 6-3, 6-1; EC’s Tindall defeated Waters, 6-2, 6-0; EC’s Wellerman defeated Taylor, 6-0, 6-0; and Buffington defeated EC’s Madison Crapps (Pisgah), 6-4, 6-4.
East Central travels to Jones College in Ellisville for matches at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 6; hosts Copiah-Lincoln at ECCC Tennis Complex at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 9; and then travels to Gulf Coast to play at 1 p.m. on Friday, March 15.
