No. 23 nationally ranked Wallace State Community College (Hanceville, Ala.) beat the East Central Community College men’s tennis team 8-1, while the Wallace State women won a close 5-4 match over the East Central women Saturday morning, March 24, at Tennis Complex on the ECCC campus in Decatur.
The East Central Warriors fell to 1-9 on the spring season, while the Lady Warriors are now 5-5.
In the women’s doubles matches, EC’s Gabriela Gomez (Bogota, Colombia) and Tatiana Quinonez (Bogota, Colombia) beat Wallace State’s Kelsi Wilson/Tempie Ennis, 9-8 (7-3); Emily Graves/Mary Ann Wolf defeated EC’s Alexis Tindall of Newton County Academy and Caylee Grace Yarborough of Loyd Star, 9-7; and Molly Whitlock/Martha Ann Lucas beat EC’s Julia Johnston of Florence and Sara Mazzella of Newton County Academy, 8-6.
In the women’s singles, Wallace State’s Wilson beat EC’s Gomez, 6-0, 6-3; EC’s Quinonez beat Graves, 6-2, 6-3; EC’s Tindall fell to Wolf, 6-0, 6-1; Ennis beat EC’s Yarborough, 7-5, 6-3; EC’s Bethany Wellerman of Newton County Academy beat Whitlock, 6-1, 6-2; and EC’s Johnston defeated Emily Wilson, 3-6, 6-3 (10-8).
In the men’s doubles action, Wallace State’s Cade Pressnell/Luke Chigwidden beat EC’s Tom Langelaar (Veldhoven, Netherlands) and Joseph Jabour of Warren Central, 8-6; Donny Camp/Nick Hestor beat EC’s Willie Wooten of Warren Central and Landon Gibson of Clarkdale, 8-4; and Andrew Bizilia/Check Freeman defeated EC’s Jake Wofford of East Webster and Emontie Lewis of Terry, 8-4.
In the men’s singles, Pressnell beat EC’s Langelaar, 6-0, 6-2; Chigwidden beat EC’s Jabour, 6-4, 6-2; Camp defeated EC’s Wooten, 6-3, 7-6; Hestor beat EC’s Lewis, 6-4, 4-6 (10-7); Bizilia defeated EC’s Gibson defeated Bails, 6-1, 7-5; and EC’s Isaac Keen of Winston Academy defeated Freeman, 6-4, 6-4.
The Warriors and Lady Warriors will host Meridian Community College on Tuesday, March 27, at 3 p.m. The ECCC teams will then make a visit to Holmes Community College in Goodman on Wednesday, March 28, for matches at 2 p.m.
