The No. 20 nationally ranked East Central Community College women’s tennis team opened the 2020 season Friday, Jan. 31, with a 7-2 home win over Itawamba, while the No. 21 ranked Warriors fell to Itawamba 6-3.

“It was a great start for our women,” said ECCC Head Tennis Coach Jay Pacelli. “All of them played hard and well. It was a team victory against a good ICC squad. On the men’s side, it was a tight match with five of the six singles matches going the distance. The Itawamba men are also a very good squad.”

Women’s Doubles Results:
EC’s Natalia Beltran (Bogota, Colombia) and Alejandra Vargas (Bogota, Colombia) defeated ICC’s Julianna Alves and Maggie Creekmore 8-2; EC’s Josie Hurst (Newton County) and Ali Grace Walker (Newton County) defeated ICC’s Riley Crouch and Farrah Fowlkes, 8-3; and ICC’s Brianna Hibler and Sydney Ferguson defeated EC’s Kayla Baucum (Newton County) and Marla Graham (Newton County Academy), 8-6.

Women’s Singles Results:
EC’s Beltran defeated Alves 6-2, 6-1; EC’s Vargas defeated Creekmore, 6-3, 6-0; EC’s Walker defeated Fowlkes 6-0, 3-6 (10-5); EC’s Hurst defeated Crouch 6-3, 6-0; ICC’s Hibler defeated Baucum 4-6, 6-4 (10-8); and EC’s Graham defeated Ferguson 6-1, 6-1.

Men’s Doubles Results:
ICC’s Franco Roldan and Sergio Garcia defeated EC’s Chris Lawrance (York, Western Australia) and Isaac Santitto (Innisfail, Queensland, Australia), 8-5; EC’s Dylan Barnett (Newton County) and Peyton Chaney (Newton County) defeated ICC’s Reese Duncan and Hayden Embry, 8-5; and ICC’s Jacambrian Madlock and Jackson Christ defeated EC’s Dominick Donaldson (Florence) and Rhy Elizar (Florence), 8-2.

Men’s Singles Results:
ICC’s Roldan defeated Lawrance, 5-7, 6-3 (10-4); ICC’s Garcia defeated Santitto, 3-6, 6-4 (10-3); ICC’s Duncan defeated Barnett, 4-6, 7-6 (12-10); ICC’s Embry defeated Chaney, 6-3, 6-3; EC’s Chris Albert (Vicksburg, St. Aloysius) defeated Madlock, 6-7, 6-2 (10-7); and EC’s Donaldson defeated ICC’s Torean King, 4-6, 6-3 (10-8).

The East Central teams will host Meridian at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 4, at the Tennis Complex on the campus in Decatur. Gulf Coast will visit East Central for matches beginning at 1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 7.
