The East Central Community College men’s and women’s tennis teams were on the road again Thursday, Feb. 9, and brought home wins against two nationally ranked Hinds Community College teams.

The East Central men, ranked No. 22 in the most recent ITA rankings, beat the No. 24 ranked Hinds Eagles 6-3. The ECCC women defeated the No. 21 ranked Hinds Lady Eagles 5-4.

“It was a great road win,” ECCC head coach Jay Pacelli said of the men’s match. “Our veteran players led the way and played with purpose against a good Hinds team.”

In men’s doubles, the ECCC team of Tom Langelaar from Veldhoven, Netherlands, and Joseph Jabour of Warren Central High School fell to Daniel Yepez/Chris Crapps, 8-4; EC’s John Jimenez of Oruro, Bolivia, and Will Stewart of Newton County High School defeated Matthew Burks/John Dennis, 8-3; and Brandon Rogers of Winston Academy and Willie Wooten out of Warren Central High School defeated Ryan Wheeless/Hayden Hendon, 8-3.

In singles play, Yepez defeated EC’s Langelaar, 2-6, 6-1 (10-7); EC’s Jimenez defeated Crapps, 6-0, 6-1; EC’s Jabour beat Burks, 4-6, 6-3 (10-4); EC’s Stewart beat Wheeless, 6-2, 6-0; Dennis beat EC’s Rogers, 7-5, 3-6 (10-3); and EC’s Graham Murphree out of Newton County High School defeated Victor Villarreal, 6-0, 6-1.

The ECCC men are now 2-1 on the season.

In women’s action, the Lady Warriors picked up their first match win of the spring season.

“It was a great team victory against the No. 21 team in the nation,” said Pacelli. “Our women persevered in close matches.”

In the women’s doubles matches, Hinds’ Mariana Alvarez/Mary Neely Meyers defeated EC’s Tatiana Quinonez of Bogota, Columbia, and Julia Johnston of Florence High School, 8-1; Hinds’ Stefy Varon Diaz/Chen Elizar beat EC’s Chaney Mills of Newton County High School and Andi McCrimon of Winston Academy, 8-3; and EC’s Samantha McCrimon of Winston Academy and Hannah Payne from Union High School beat Jordan Warren/Brooke Myers, 8-6.

In singles play, Alvarez beat EC’s Quinonez, 6-0, 6-1; Diaz beat EC’s Mills, 6-1, 6-0; EC’s Johnston beat Meyers, 6-3, 4-6 (12-10); EC’s Andi McCrimon defeated Emily Griffin, 6-0, 6-1; EC’s An Duong from Richland High School defeated Warren, 6-2, 6-1; and EC’s Emily Dykeman of Forest High School beat Myers, 6-4, 6-4.

The Lady Warriors are now 1-2 on the season.

The East Central men’s and women’s teams travel to Wesson Wednesday, Feb. 15, to face Copiah-Lincoln Community College at 2 p.m. before traveling to Ellisville to face Jones County Junior College on Tuesday, Feb. 21, at 2 p.m.
