ECCC Tennis Warriors Shutout Co-Lin, Lady Warriors Drop 7-2 Match

The East Central Community College men’s tennis team shutout the Copiah-Lincoln Wolves 9-0 for the second time this season, while the East Central Lady Warriors dropped a 7-2 match to the No. 22 ranked Co-Lin Lady Wolves in action Friday, March 8, at the ECCC Tennis Complex in Decatur.

The ECCC men and women are both 6-5 on the season.

“We had a couple of close doubles losses on the women’s side, but our women’s team keeps improving,” said ECCC head coach Jay Pacelli. “Kayla Baucum elevated her singles game today and had her best match of the season. Bethany Wellerman had a strong effort as well. We got strong tennis from our top three singles positions on the men’s side against an undermanned Co-Lin team.”

Men’s Doubles Results:
EC’s Chris Lawrance (York, Western Australia) and Isaac Santitto (Innisfail, Queensland, Australia) defeated Co-Lin’s Ray Drane and Drew Nelson, 8-0; and EC’s Dylan Barnett (Newton County) and Peyton Chaney (Newton County) and EC’s Isaac Keen (Winston Academy) and Jake Wofford (East Webster) won by forfeit.

Men’s Singles Results:
EC’s Lawrance defeated Drane, 6-0, 6-0; EC’s Santitto defeated Nelson, 6-1, 6-0; EC’s Barnett defeated Toby White, 6-0, 6-0; and EC’s Keen, Wofford, and Chaney won by forfeit.

Women’s Doubles Results:
Co-Lin’s Paula Coronado and Carmen Manicea defeated EC’s Josie Hurst (Newton County) and Ali Grace Walker (Newton County), 9-7; Co-Lin’s Katy Clark and Kara Clark defeated EC’s Gabriela Gomez (Bogota, Colombia) and Kayla Baucum (Newton County), 8-1; and Co-Lin’s Madison Shows and McKenzie Shows defeated EC’s Bethany Wellerman (Newton County Academy) and Alexis Tindall (Newton County Academy), 8-6.

Women’s Singles Results:
Coronado defeated EC’s Gomez, 6-2, 6-4; Manicea defeated EC’s Tindall, 6-0, 6-0; Katy Clark defeated EC’s Walker 6-3, 6-0; Kara Clark defeated EC’s Hurst 6-1, 6-0; EC’s Wellerman defeated Co-Lin’s Ashlyn Locke, 6-1, 6-3; and EC’s Baucum defeated Co-Lin’s Faith Bergeron, 4-6, 6-4 (11-9).

East Central travels to Perkinston to face Gulf Coast on Friday, March 15, at 1 p.m. The teams will then take a spring break trip to Alabama. The Warriors will play Gadsden State on Saturday, March 16, and the Lady Warriors will face Snead State. Both matches begin at 2 p.m. in Gadsden, Ala. The following day, both teams will play Wallace State in Hanceville, Ala., at 1 p.m.

The next home matches are Wednesday, March 27, against Meridian at 3 p.m.
