ECCC Women’s Tennis Team Wins, Men Fall Against Gulf Coast

The East Central Community College tennis teams hosted Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in matches Thursday, Feb. 28, with the Lady Warriors picking up a 6-3 win, and the Warriors dropping a 7-2 match to the visitors from Perkinston.

The ECCC Lady Warriors improved to 4-3 on the season, while the men fell to 4-3.

“It was a good victory for the women,” said ECCC head tennis coach Jay Pacelli. “Our top two doubles teams are building confidence and getting better. The men had a good showing against one of the top teams in the state. We got good singles wins from our top two players Chris Lawrance and Isaac Santitto.”

Men’s Doubles Results:
Gulf Coast’s Austin Vos and Cole Wagoner defeated EC’s Chris Lawrance (York, Western Australia) and Isaac Santitto (Innisfail, Queensland, Australia), 8-6; Gulf Coast’s Evan Chubb and Patrick Roth defeated EC’s Peyton Chaney (Newton County) and Dylan Barnett (Newton County), 8-3; and Gulf Coast’s Reid Crow and Clint Verrett defeated EC’s Isaac Keen (Winston Academy) and Jake Wofford (East Webster), 8-3.

Men’s Singles Results:
EC’s Lawrance defeated Vos, 4-2 (retired); EC’s Santitto defeated Wagoner, 6-2, 6-2; Roth defeated EC’s Barnett, 6-1, 6-0; Chubb defeated EC’s Keen, 6-1, 6-4; Gulf Coast’s Wesley Fontaine defeated EC’s Will Ladner (Stone County) 6-2, 6-2; and Gulf Coast’s Anthony Schloegel defeated EC’s Chaney, 6-2, 6-0.

Women’s Doubles Results:
Gulf Coast’s Margarita Lopareva and Megan Bankston defeated EC’s Ali Grace Walker (Newton County) and Josie Hurst (Newton County) 9-8 (7-4); EC’s Gabriela Gomez (Bogota, Colombia) and Kayla Baucum (Newton County) defeated Gulf Coast’s Chloe Fell and Destiny Davis, 8-1; and EC’s Bethany Wellerman (Newton County Academy) and Alexis Tindall (Newton County Academy) won by forfeit.

Women’s Singles Results:
Lopareva defeated EC’s Gomez, 6-1, 6-0; Bankston defeated EC’s Hurst, 6-4, 6-1; EC’s Tindall defeated Davis, 6-2, 6-1; EC’s Walker defeated Fell, 6-0, 6-0; EC’s Wellerman defeated Gulf Coast’s Ivy Savell, 6-0, 6-0; and EC’s Baucum won by forfeit.

East Central’s remains at home to face Southwest on Friday, March 1, at 1 p.m., before hosting Hinds on Tuesday, March 5, at 2 p.m.
