The East Central Community College Workforce Development Center is offering various courses during the month of October at locations throughout the college district of Leake, Neshoba, Newton, Scott and Winston counties.

Decatur

NCCER Core Curriculum Class: NCCER (National Center for Construction Education and Research) Core Curriculum Class will meet from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Brackford J. Tucker Applied Technology Building beginning Oct. 5, 2017, for 28 consecutive Thursdays.  Cost is $200 per student and includes a book and OSHA card.

The course will cover areas such as basic safety, shop math and electrical safety. The Core Class must be taken as a pre-requisite for all NCCER areas of study which includes HVAC and Industrial Mainteanance Apprenticeships. In addition, an OSHA 10-hour training will be provided in this class. Harold Hollingsworth will serve as instructor.

Forest

First Steps–The Process of Starting a Small Business: This free seminar is offered by the Small Business Development Center and will meet from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2017, at the Forest Career Advancement Center located at 316 South Main Avenue.

The seminar outlines the basic steps to start a business. Topics will include regulations such as licenses and permits, legal forms of business ownership, basic marketing concepts to help analyze the revenue potential, lending terminology, outline for a business plan, and other resources to assist in starting a business. Ronald Westbrook, Small Business Development Center director, will serve as instructor.

Philadelphia

Medical Office Terminology 1–Classes begin Thursday, Oct. 5, and will meet from 5 to 8 p.m. for 10 consecutive Thursdays at the Old U.S. Motors Building located at 1224 Pecan Avenue. Cost is $200 per person and includes a book. There is an additional $50 charge for those who wish to test to receive academic credit or PLA (prior learning assessment) three hour credit.

The course will study the medical language relating to various physical conditions, clinical procedures, etc. An emphasis is placed on spelling and pronunciation. Judith Hurtt will serve as instructor.

How to Develop a Business Plan: This free seminar is offered by the Small Business Development Center and will meet from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2017, at Neshoba Business Enterprise Center, located at 1018 Saxton Airport Road.

The seminar is designed to assist in preparing a business plan, industry research, description of company products and services, identifying target customer groups and creating a marketing plan. Financial components include startup costs and preparation of a projected cash flow statement. Ronald Westbrook, Small Business Development Center director, will serve as instructor.

Basic Carpentry–Classes begin Monday, Oct. 23, and will meet from 6 to 9 p.m. for eight consecutive Mondays at the Philadelphia/Neshoba County Career-Technical Center located at 900 Valley View Drive. Cost is $150 per person. James Boykin will serve as instructor.

Technology for Teachers–Classes begin Monday, Oct. 23, and will meet from 6 to 9 p.m. for eight consecutive Mondays at the Philadelphia/Neshoba County Career-Technical Center located at 900 Valley View Drive. Cost is $50 per person.

The course will cover several topics related to enhancement of technology available to teachers within the classroom, including mail merge, Engrade, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, educational apps, and teacher tube. Lacie Flake will serve as instructor.

Certified Nurse Aide (CNA)–Classes begin Monday, Oct. 30, and will meet from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday for five consecutive weeks at the Philadelphia/Neshoba County Career-Technical Center located at 900 Valley View Drive. Cost is $766 per person and includes everything except the TB Skin Test. A WorkKeys test will be given and participants must score at the Silver Level to attend this class. Wendy Cumberland and Niva Alexander will serve as instructors.
