Led by the play of freshman Jacob Hamner, the East Central Community College golf team finished in 12th place at the 2018 National Junior College Athletic Association Division II Golf Championships held May 21-24 at GlenLakes Golf Club in Foley, Ala.

It was the first-ever appearance for an ECCC golf team in the national championship tournament.

Hamner, who prepped at Vanderbilt Catholic High School in Houma, La., finished in 13th place among all players and in doing so was named NJCAA Second Team All-American. He shot a three-over par 291 over the 72-hole tournament. He was also named to the All-Tournament Team.

Hamner will play golf at William Carey University in Hattiesburg next year.

The four-day tournament featured 21 teams and 130 total golfers.

As a team, East Central shot 65-over par 1,217. Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College claimed the championship by one shot over Meridian Community College.

Also participating for East Central were sophomore Bailey Threlkeld of Choctawatchee High School in Fort Walton Beach, Fla., who finished tied for 41st with a 13-over par 301; sophomore David Barry of West Jones High School in Laurel, who was tied for 64th with a 21-over par 309; freshman Nathan Davis of Newton County High School, who was 81st with a 32-over par 320; and freshman Jacob School out of Madison Central, who was 86th with a 37-over par 325.

Threlkeld will play golf at William Carey next year, and Barry will play at Mississippi College in Clinton.
