The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) will hold training using the National Incident Management System on the East Central Community College campus in Decatur July 10-14, 2017.

MEMA Director Lee Smithson will open the weeklong training with remarks at 9 a.m. on Monday, July 10, in Thrash Auditorium in Newton Hall on the ECCC campus. The public is invited to hear Smithson’s opening comments.

The classroom-facilitated training is intended for emergency management personnel, community and city leaders, school staff and administrators, military personnel, and first responders to ensure coordinated responses to natural or manmade disasters and other potentially life threatening emergencies before they happen.

The National Incident Management System (NIMS) was created by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to provide a comprehensive, national approach to emergency incident management that is applicable to all jurisdictional levels and across functional disciplines. NIMS provides a consistent nationwide framework and approach to enable government at all levels (federal, state, tribal, and local) , the private sector, and nongovernmental organizations to work together to prepare for, prevent, respond to, recover from, and mitigate the effects of incidents regardless of the cause, size, location, or complexity.

The components of NIMS include preparedness, communications and information management, resource management, command and management, and ongoing management and maintenance.

Those interested in registering for the courses should contact their county Emergency Management Office.

The training schedule for the week includes:

  • Monday, July 10, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.: IS-700 National Incident Management System, An Introduction and IS-800 National Response Framework, An Introduction. No prerequisites.
  • Tuesday, July 11, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.: NIMS G-100 Introduction to the Incident Command System and G-200 Incident Command System for Single Resources and Initial Action Incidents. No prerequisites.

MEMA Training Coordinator Jesse Murphree, a native of Carthage, will be the instructor for the courses.

“When the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency inquired about holding this important training on the East Central Community College campus we proudly accepted,” said ECCC President Dr. Billy Stewart. “Being prepared in advance to handle any emergency situation is extremely important for emergency management and military personnel, first responders, community leaders and others across our five-county district and the state of Mississippi, and being able to host preparedness training on our campus is a natural fit for ECCC’s Institutional Commitment of Community Partnerships.”
