East Central Community College (ECCC) announces the upcoming retirement of Vice President for Business Operations Mickey Vance, effective June 30, 2025, after more than three decades of service to the institution.
“It has been the privilege of my career to serve East Central Community College for these past 31 years. I am deeply grateful to our Board of Trustees for their support, to Presidents Dr. Eddie Smith, Dr. Phil Sutphin, Dr. Billy Stewart, and Dr. Brent Gregory for their leadership, as well as the countless other employees and friends that I met along the way. I also want to pay special tribute to Mr. Harvey Trapp—whose dedication and vision before my time set a high bar and helped pave the way for all that we have achieved. ECCC will always hold a special place in my heart, not only as a place of employment, but for being such a large part of my life,” said Vance.
An alumnus of ECCC, Vance began his professional journey at the college in September of 1992, before briefly transitioning to a role at La-Z-Boy in Newton. After a stint in the private sector, he returned to the college where he would go on to build a remarkable career spanning over 31 years, making him the longest-serving Vice President of Business Operations in ECCC history.
Throughout his tenure, Vance worked alongside four ECCC presidents: Dr. Eddie Smith, Dr. Phil Sutphin, Dr. Billy Stewart, and current president Dr. Brent Gregory. His leadership has been instrumental in maintaining the college's financial strength, successfully navigating enrollment shifts, changes in state appropriations, and numerous other challenges, including natural disasters, economic downturns, and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Vance’s financial oversight played a key role in the planning and completion of major capital projects across campus. Under his guidance, the college successfully executed construction and renovation initiatives including the Smith Student Services Building, the Sutphin Nursing Building, Barber Hall, Warrior Hall, Davis Hall, Stewart Hall, Carson Hall, and the full renovation of Cross Hall, Leake Hall, Todd Hall, and Newsome Hall among many other upgrades. These projects not only enhanced the student experience but modernized and expanded ECCC’s learning environment for future generations.
Respected statewide, Vance was selected Outstanding Chief Business Officer by the CCBO (Community College Business Officers), a national organization. Colleagues across the state often turn to him for insight, mentorship, and guidance in navigating complex financial landscapes. His influence has had a far-reaching impact beyond the campus of ECCC.
“Mickey Vance's unwavering commitment and expertise have left an indelible mark on East Central Community College,” said ECCC President Dr. Brent Gregory. “His contributions have not only fortified our institution’s financial foundation but have also set a standard of excellence that will serve the college for years to come.”
