The No. 12 ranked Chipola College Lady Indians defeated the East Central Community College Lady Warriors 70-57 in women’s basketball action Friday, Nov. 22, on the Chipola campus in Marianna, Fla.

The two teams were tied 13-13 after one period, before the Lady Indians took a nine-point lead into the locker room at the half. Chipola surged to an 18-point lead after three periods before a strong final period by East Central closed the gap to the final 13-point margin.

East Central falls to 2-2 overall. The Chipola Lady Indians are 7-1.

East Central was led by the 18 points and five rebounds of sophomore guard Mylisha Hammond (McComb). Sophomore forward KeiMoya Walker (Jackson, Murrah) added 13 and sophomore guard Jariyah Covington (Starkville) chipped in 11.

Chipola controlled the boards, pulling down 58 rebounds to just 36 for East Central. The Lady Warriors hit just 32 percent of their shots from the floor and 54 percent from the free throw line in the loss.

The Lady Warriors will now compete in the EC Classic during the Thanksgiving holiday week. The East Central women will play LSU-Eunice on Monday, Nov. 25, and Coahoma on Tuesday, Nov. 26, both at 1 p.m. The ECCC men will face the Mississippi State University Club Team on Monday, Nov. 25, and Faith Prep on Nov. 26, both at 7 p.m.

Also competing in the EC Classic on the women’s side is Meridian Community College. The other men’s teams include Pearl River, Jones College, and Bevill State (Ala.). All EC Classic games are in Brackeen-Wood Gym on the campus in Decatur.
