The East Central Community College women’s tennis team lived up to its new top 25 ranking with a 7-2 win over Gulf Coast on Friday, March 15, while the East Central men dropped an 8-1 match to the Gulf Coast Bulldogs. The two teams met on the Gulf Coast campus in Perkinston.

The Lady Warriors, who entered the Oracle/ITA NJCAA Women’s Top 25 poll this week at No. 25, improved to 7-5 on the season, while the Warriors fell to 6-6.

“It was a solid victory for the women,” said ECCC head tennis coach Jay Pacelli. “The men lost to the top team in the state, but we had some good individual performances.”

Men’s Doubles Results:
Gulf Coast’s Austin Vos and Cole Wagoner defeated EC’s Chris Lawrance (York, Western Australia) and Isaac Santitto (Innisfail, Queensland, Australia), 8-4; Gulf Coast’s Evan Chubb and Patrick Roth defeated EC’s Peyton Chaney (Newton County) and Dylan Barnett (Newton County), 8-3; and Gulf Coast’s Reid Crow and Wesley Fontaine defeated EC’s Isaac Keen (Winston Academy) and Jake Wofford (East Webster), 8-2.

Men’s Singles Results:
EC’s Lawrance defeated Gulf Coast’s Nicolas Bettignie, 6-4, 6-3; Wagoner defeated EC’s Santitto 6-3, 3-6 (10-8); Chubb defeated EC’s Barnett, 6-4, 6-3; Roth defeated EC’s Keen, 6-0, 6-1; Fontaine defeated EC’s Wofford, 6-2, 6-1; and Gulf Coast’s Anthony Schloegel defeated EC’s Will Ladner (Stone County), 6-2, 6-0.

Women’s Doubles Results:
Gulf Coast’s Margarita Lopareva and Megan Bankston defeated EC’s Ali Grace Walker (Newton County) and Josie Hurst (Newton County), 8-6; EC’s Gabriela Gomez (Bogota, Colombia) and Kayla Baucum (Newton County) defeated Gulf Coast’s Chloe Fell and Destiny Davis, 8-0; and EC’s Bethany Wellerman (Newton County Academy) and Alexis Tindall (Newton County Academy) won by forfeit.

Women’s Singles Results:
Lopareva defeated EC’s Gomez, 7-5, 6-1; EC’s Walker defeated Bankston, 6-4, 6-2; EC’s Tindall defeated Davis, 6-0, 6-1; EC’s Hurst defeated Fell, 6-0, 6-1; and EC’s Wellerman and EC’s Baucum won by forfeit.

After a spring break trip to Alabama, the East Central teams will return home for two MACJC matches. The Warriors and Lady Warriors will face Meridian at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, March 27, and Holmes at 1 p.m. on Friday, March 29. Both matches will be at the ECCC Tennis Complex in Decatur.
