The East Central Community College golf team posted a top-five finish in the ICC Invitational, which served as the second MACCC conference event, this week. The event was played at River Birch Golf Club in Amory over two rounds on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 4 and Oct. 5. 

The Warriors opened the tournament with a strong showing by carding a 303 as a team. The finish after round one was good for fifth place going into the second day of play. The opening round was highlighted by a brilliant even-par round of 72 by River Maskew (Lucedale). 

The second round proved more challenging for the Warriors as the team posted a 315, bringing the team total to 618 on the event. Despite the higher score in the second round, the Warriors finished just five strokes from fourth place. Daulton Nelson (Meridian) shined in the second round with a 76, jumping the freshman up nine spots individually. Nelson posted a 154 total between his two rounds which tied him for 16th individually. Maskew posted a 79 on the second day to bring his two-day total to 151, which was 12th best in the 52-player field. Bryce Denley (Mandeville, La.) shot a 76, 79 for a 155 on the week, while Gage Miller (Anniston, Ala.) was just three strokes back with a 77, 81 total of 158. Ethan Wade (Laurel) and Davis Pool (Caledonia) rounded out the Warriors with 165 and 179 totals, respectively. 

Meridian won the event with a 586 team score after posting rounds of 295 and 291, while Co-Lin finished second just four strokes back at 590. Northeast Mississippi shot a 591 for a third-place finish and closed out the sub-300 team scores. Itawamba, the host school, finished with a 613, while Southwest, Hinds, and East Mississippi all finished behind the Warriors. 

The Warriors are back in action on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 25-26 at Windance GC for the third conference event of the year, this one hosted by Mississippi Gulf Coast.
