The East Central Community College men's tennis team stretched their winning streak to three this week with back-to-back wins on Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 23-24. The Warriors defeated Meridian, 5-4, in a tough road-trip match before moving past the Co-Lin Wolves, 6-3, at home. ECCC takes its streak to Southwest on Friday, Feb. 26, as the team is set to take on the Bears in Summit at 3 p.m.
ECCC's Chris Lawrance (York, Australia) and Isaac Santitto (Innisfail, Australia) played No. 1 doubles in both matches and defeated Meridian, 8-6, before falling to Co-Lin 8-5. Ian Gordon (Vicksburg) and Chris Albert (Vicksburg) fell to Eagles and Wolves, 8-3 and 8-2. Steed Springfield (Vicksburg) and Garrett Crimm (Mathiston) played in the No. 3 slot in both matches and went 2-0 on the week with a pair of 8-4 wins.
In singles action, Lawrence dropped a hard-fought match versus Meridian in a tiebreaker, 4-6, 6-4, 10-0, but bounced back versus Co-Lin with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 1. Santitto played No. 2 singles and grabbed a pair of wins with a 6-3, 6-2 win over the Eagles and a stellar come-from-behind victory over Co-Lin, 0-6, 6-4, 10-6. Albert fell at No. 3 singles against Meridian, 6-2, 6-3, before getting a win over the Wolves, 6-3, 6-4. Gordon was another player that turned his luck around as he dropped his match versus the Eagles, 6-2, 6-1, before duking it out with Co-Lin with a 6-2, 7-6, win at No. 4 singles. Springfield went 1-1 at No. 5 with a 6-2, 7-6 win over Meridian and a 6-1, 6-0 loss to Co-Lin. Crimm rounded out the singles play with a 2-0 week with 6-1, 6-1 and 6-2, 6-4 wins.
"It was really a team victory for us against Meridian, and a great comeback for us against Co-Lin, being down 2-1 after doubles play," said ECCC head coach Jay Pacelli. "We had several players play well and Chris Albert and Garrett Crimm played some of the best singles matches of the season. On to Southwest!"
