The Lady Warriors of East Central Community College are 1-1 thus far in the week with a big, road victory over Meridian, 5-4, on Feb. 23 and a loss to Co-Lin at home, 6-3, on Feb. 24. The Lady Warriors are once again on the road this Friday, Feb. 26, as they travel to Southwest to play the Lady Bears at 2 p.m.
In doubles play, ECCC's Natalia Beltran (Bogota, Colombia) and Alejandra Vargas (Bogota, Colombia) played at No. 1. The duo got a win at Meridian after the match was retired midway through by a Lady Eagle player. The pair lost to Co-Lin, 8-1. Anna Moore (Decatur) and Sarah Cline (Brandon) grabbed a victory over the Lady Eagles, 8-6, in a tough match before falling the Co-Lin, 8-3 at No. 2 doubles. Madison Autry (Kosciusko) and Laila Sisson (Collinsville) teamed up at No. 3 and lost to Meridian, 8-5, before posting a stellar 9-8 (7-5) victory over the Lady Wolves.
Beltran went 1-1 on the week in singles with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Meridian and a 6-1, 6-1 loss to Co-Lin. Vargas dropped the pair of matches 6-3, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2, while Cline posted two wins, 6-4, 6-4 and 6-2, 6-2. Moore split on the week with a 6-2, 6-0 win over the Lady Eagles and a 6-3, 6-1 loss to Co-Lin. Madison Gregg (Maben) dropped two, 6-4, 6-1 and 4-6, 6-3, 10-5 in a close one against Co-Lin at No. 5. Courtney Gill (Carthage) rounded out singles play with a back-and-forth loss to Meridian, 6-3, 5-7, 13-11, before responding big with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Co-Lin.
"It was a terrific conference victory over an always formidable Meridian," said ECCC head tennis coach Jay Pacelli. "The women played with a lot of energy against Co-Lin and had some great play from Sarah Cline and Courtney Gill. I'm also very proud of our No. 3 doubles win and how they persevered in a tough match."
