Assistant Football Coach, Defensive Backs Coach
Charles Jones of Waynesboro, Ga., was recently named an assistant football coach at East Central Community College in Decatur, MS, announced first-year head coach Ken Karcher.
Jones’ main area of responsibility will be serving as Defensive Backs Coach.
Prior to joining the ECCC staff, Jones served as defensive coordinator/strength and conditioning coach at Bessemer City High School in Bessemer, Ala., a position held since June 2011.
He was defensive coordinator at Jackson-Olin High School in Birmingham, Ala., from May 2010 – May 2011, followed by a stint as defensive backfield coach at Bessemer (Ala.) High School from February 2009 to March 2010.
Jones began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Mississippi State University, where he coached defensive backs from July 2008 to December 2008.
A former football standout at Burke County High School, Jones continued his career at the University of Alabama having received a four-year athletic scholarship from 1999-2003.
He was a three year starter and was named to the All-Southeastern Conference (SEC) Team as a defensive back in 2003. He also received the Bobby Jones Most Improved Defensive Back Award in 2001.
Jones continued his football career on the professional level. He was a member of the New York Giants team from April 2004 to December 2004 and later joined the Georgia Force of the Arena Football League from February 2006 to June 2007.
He received a bachelor’s degree in marketing from the University of Alabama in August 2005.
