Coach Mickey Mays
Special Teams Coordinator, Recruiting Coordinator, Defensive Line Coach
Mickey Mays was recently named Special Teams Coordinator, Recruiting Coordinator, and Defensive Line Coach at East Central Community College in Decatur, announced head football coach Ken Karcher.
Mays is a former assistant to Coach Karcher, having served on his Liberty University staff as defensive line coach and special teams coordinator.
Karcher said he looks forward to working with his former assistant and what he brings to the Warrior football program.
“Coach Mays is someone I trust and respect as a football coach,” said Coach Karcher. “He does a great job teaching the fundamentals of the game to his players and is someone who cares about the whole person. I am excited that Mickey has agreed to become a part of my staff and help East Central build a first-class program.”
Mays has 30 years coaching experience on the high school, college and professional levels.
He began his career in 1982 as a secondary coach at Milan High School in Milan, Tenn.
His high school coaching experience also includes stints as secondary coach at Humboldt (Tenn.) High School (1985); head coach at Chester County High School in Henderson, Tenn. (1990-91), where he was named 1991 District Coach of the Year; head coach at Cordova (Tenn.) High School; and defensive coordinator/offensive line coach at Sequatchie County High School in Dunlap, Tenn.
Mays entered the collegiate coaching ranks as a graduate assistant at the University of Tennessee-Martin (defensive ends) in 1986, then Memphis State University (offensive line/tight ends) in 1987-88, and Louisiana State University (running backs) in 1989.
He coached on both sides of the ball during a six-year stint at the University of Texas-El Paso (1993-98). He was part of the 1996 defense (linebackers’ coach) that ranked number two in total defense in the 16-team WAC Conference.
Mays was a member of Coach Karcher’s staff at Liberty University from 2003-05. Under Mays’ leadership, the special teams scored six touchdowns in 2004 and was ranked seventh nationally in net punting in 2005.
Mays was later named defensive line coach and special teams coordinator at Charleston Southern University in Charleston, South Carolina, serving from 2006-07. The squad registered a school record nine victories and led the Big South Conference in defensive sacks in 2006.
Mays also experienced successful coaching stints on the professional level.
He served as defensive line and punt team coach for the Orlando Thunder of the World League of American Football in 1992, when the squad won the Eastern Division title and finished World Bowl runners-up.
Other professional league coaching stints include the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League (1999), the Berlin Thunder of NFL Europe (2000), and the X.F.L. Division Champs, the Orlando Rage (2001).
Mays served in 2008 as offensive and defensive line coach for Arena Bowl Champion Philadelphia Soul, which set a franchise record for victories (16) and team sacks. He also served as director of player personnel.
Prior to joining the ECCC staff, Mays served as defensive assistant with the Virginia Destroyers of the United Football League in 2012.
A native of Adamsville, Tenn., Mays is a 1977 graduate of Humboldt (Tenn.) High School. He received a bachelor’s degree from Rhodes College in Memphis in 1981 and earned a master’s degree in education administration from the University of Memphis in 1989.
