East Central Community College’s Theta Xi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year colleges, will host “Super Stellar Night,” a prom for special needs students in the five-county district, from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, 2016, in Mabry Memorial Cafeteria on the Decatur campus.
According to Theta Xi sponsor Dr. Amanda Walton, “Each year, Phi Theta Kappa challenges local chapters to complete an ‘Honors In Action’ project and provides us eight to 10 themes to choose from. This year, we chose ‘Myth vs. Reality’ as our theme. The advisors basically came up with the idea because, working in our capacities at the college, we see how some people view those with special needs as different, which is a myth. We wanted to do something to make them feel special and we felt like they would enjoy a prom.”
East Central Community College student athletes and Student Body Association officers will serve as dates for the participants. Walton, who is the college’s director of housing/student activities, said the group has had plenty of prom dresses donated and local businesses have been very generous in donating to the cause.
Additional sponsors for Phi Theta Kappa are James Miller, dean of students, and Jenna Wright, mathematics instructor.
