Seizing the Opportunity

January 22, 2025

At 18 years old, Bryson Norman faced a critical question: building a future with limited work experience and financial resources. Growing up in a small Mississippi town, Norman sought a career that would provide stability and allow him to make a difference. His search led him to an opportunity through the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act funding provided by the Mississippi Department of Employment Security. With this support, Norman obtained his Class A commercial driver’s license and earned his electrical lineman certification from East Central Community College’s electrical lineman program, setting him on the path to a new career.

Norman had always respected the work of linemen who restored power after storms and kept communities connected. However, the cost of training and certification seemed out of reach. When he learned about the WIOA funding, Norman found a way to pursue his goal.

A WIOA case manager at ECCC helped Norman navigate the application process and provided career counseling to ensure he could manage both the CDL program and the lineman program.

The electrical lineman program at ECCC was both physically and mentally challenging. Norman trained in all weather conditions, learning to climb utility poles, operate equipment, and perform electrical repairs. At the same time, he completed the truck driving program to earn his Class A CDL, a key qualification for transporting lineman equipment and materials.

Despite the challenges, Norman succeeded. His instructors praised his dedication, quick learning, and teamwork. Balancing the two programs required long hours and discipline, but Norman remained committed.

After completing the program, Norman passed his CDL exam and earned his lineman certification, making him a strong candidate in the energy sector. He soon secured a position with the Central Electric Power Association, where he worked on power line construction and maintenance. This role provides financial stability and allows Norman to contribute to his community by ensuring reliable power during emergencies and daily life.

For Norman, WIOA funding was a critical resource. By covering the cost of his training and offering career support, MDES helped him gain credentials and start a career with growth potential. Norman’s experience has encouraged others in his community to pursue their goals, showing that with determination and the right resources, success is achievable. He hopes to mentor future linemen and encourage others to take advantage of similar opportunities.

From a teenager with limited experience to a certified lineman and licensed truck driver, Norman’s story demonstrates what can be achieved through perseverance and the support of programs like WIOA. His journey serves as an example for anyone ready to take the first step toward a better future.
