New Faces Highlight 2016-17 East Central Women’s Basketball Team

Fresh off a state championship season, East Central Community College Women’s Basketball Coach Crandal Porter has a lot of holes to fill if the Lady Warriors want to repeat their magical run of last season.

The Lady Warriors won the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges State Championship last February with a 75-63 win over Itawamba, before falling in the first round of the National Junior College Athletic Association Region 23 Tournament. Along the way, East Central won 19 straight games.

East Central’s Season Ends with MACJC State Semifinal Loss to Northwest

The East Central Community College Warriors took a two touchdown lead into the locker room at halftime, but could not hold on as the No. 4 nationally ranked Northwest Mississippi Community College Rangers stormed back for a 21-14 win in a Mississippi Association of Community and Junior College state semifinal football game played Saturday, Nov. 5, in Bailey Stadium in Decatur.

With the win, Northwest advanced to the MACJC State Championship at East Mississippi Community College in Scooba on Saturday, Nov. 12. 

ECCC Lady Warriors Open Season with Win at Coahoma

The defending state champion East Central Community College Lady Warriors went on the road Thursday, Nov. 3, and came home with a season-opening 80-75 win over the Coahoma Lady Tigers in a game played in Clarksdale.

With 10 new players on the roster, East Central fell behind after one quarter of play, 21-18. However, a strong second quarter gave the Lady Warriors the 44-39 halftime lead.

Coahoma cut the lead to three with less than a minute to play before East Central pulled out the five-point win.

ECCC Men’s Basketball Opens Season with Road Victory

A pair of free throws by freshman point guard Jaylon Chiles with eight seconds to play gave the East Central Community College Warriors a 64-62 win over Coahoma Community College in the season opener played in Clarksdale Thursday, Nov. 3.

Chiles, a product of Biloxi High School, scored 11 points and dished out four assists in just 13 minutes of play.

East Central led by as many as 12 points in the first half before the Tigers closed the gap to 32-27 at intermission.

ECCC to Offer Free Admission to Area Youth League Football Players/Coaches for Football Playoff Game

The East Central Community College Department of Athletics is inviting all youth league football players and their coaches in the college’s five-county service area to attend the Warriors’ MACJC semifinal football playoff game Saturday, Nov. 5.

East Central will face the No. 4 ranked Northwest Mississippi Community College Rangers Saturday, with kickoff at 2 p.m. from Bailey Stadium in Decatur.

East Central Football Warriors to Host State Semifinal Playoff Game Nov. 5

The East Central Community College Football Warriors will host the defending national champion and No. 5 ranked Northwest Mississippi Community College Rangers in the semifinals of the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges state playoffs Saturday, Nov. 5.

Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. at Bailey Stadium on the East Central campus in Decatur. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students.

ECCC Men’s Soccer Ends Season with Quarterfinal Loss

The East Central Community College men’s soccer team saw its season come to an end with a 5-1 loss to the Southwest Mississippi Community College Bears in an MACJC quarterfinal matchup in Bailey Stadium in Decatur Tuesday, Oct. 25.

ECCC’s lone goal was by Fredy Gutierrez of Pontotoc High School on a penalty kick.

Coach Kenneth Thompson’s men’s squad finished 9-8 on the season and 5-3 in the North Division.

ECCC Women’s Soccer Team Falls to Pearl River in the MACJC Playoffs

The East Central Community College women’s soccer team ended its season after falling 1-0 to Pearl River Community College in overtime of the quarterfinals of the MACJC playoffs Tuesday, Oct. 25, in Bailey Stadium in Decatur.

Coach Gray Massey’s East Central squad finished the season 12-4 overall and 6-2 in the North Division.

This year’s team had the best start in school history at 9-0. The women have finished in the second place in the MACJC North Division three years in a row.
